Curriculum at Sacred Heart

Curriculum at Sacred Heart

At Sacred Heart, we work to fulfil the vision that each pupil will:

  • demonstrate our school values and be active contributors at school, home and in the wider society
  • value and develop their unique talents and gifts to reach their full academic and spiritual potential
  • be effective communicators
  • be aspirational for themselves and their peers
  • develop their skills, knowledge and understanding to thrive as life-long learner

In order to achieve this, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and teach the National Curriculum. This is to ensure children have the knowledge and skills needed year-on-year to ensure good progress throughout their primary school education.  We have designed our curriculum with additional experiences and enrichment activities to help children learn more and remember more.

RE is a core subject at Sacred Heart and is based on the Curriculum Directory (guidance from the Bishops of England and Wales) detailing what should be taught in each phase throughout the school.   RE permeates all aspects of school life.  Within RE we teach the children about all the major world religions and are always mindful that we have children of other faiths and no faith at school.

In addition to the Early Years Foundation Stage, National Curriculum and RE Curriculum, we overlay an additional focus on the Personal, Social and Emotional development of the individual.   As a result, we adopt a relational approach to learning, which brings together the following inter-related curriculums and values:

  • ThriveR  Curriculum which offers right-time, social and emotional development.
  • Zones of regulation Curriculum, which is used to identify our emotions and feeling and how these impact on our learning and relationships with others
  • A restorative approach to behaviour, which supports our pupils in understanding their actions and the consequences to self and others
  • The curriculum is underpinned by the School’s Core Values (Love, Achievement, Mutual Respect, Patience, Generosity, Consideration, Care, Ambition, Prayer and Tolerance) and these are taught on their own and through other areas of the curriculum, including assemblies. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils and their understanding of the core values of our society are woven through the curriculum.

We have a ThriveR accreditation and we are an ‘Attachment Aware’ school.

As a school, we believe the combination of the academic, relational curriculums and values-based approach, offer our pupils the best provision, enabling them to reach their full potential academically, personally, socially, emotionally and spiritually - ready for the next phase of their education and to achieve our mission to

 ‘Grow in Love’.
