Relationship and Sexual Education  - RSE

Relationships and Sex Education forms part of the Health Education and Science Curriculum in school and is rooted in our Catholic Faith.

RSE is taught throughout the school using the Ten Ten scheme of learning “Live Life to the Full ”. Ten Ten’s programme for Catholic primary schools, Life to the Full, teaches Relationships Education and Health Education within the context of a Christian understanding of human sexuality rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church.

Given that RHE (Relationships and Health Education) is now a statutory subject for all schools, at Sacred Heart, we are embracing “the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life” by giving our pupils knowledge “that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships” (DFE Statutory Guidance).

We will deliver this teaching through the prism of Catholic RSHE.

The framework of our programme is taken from the Model Catholic RSE Programme by the Catholic Education Service, which has been highlighted by the Department of Education as a work of good practice.

For more information, see Ten Ten's Life to the Full.

In addition, the Personal Social and Health Education Curriculum Map is listed on this page as the summer term focus on Relationships and Sex Education is detailed in this map.

Puberty

As part of the RSE curriculum, the pupils in Years 5 and 6 are taught about Puberty. The school nursing team are invited into school to provide additional support for the pupils and they deliver two talk:

  • Talk 1 is delivered to the classes individually, but as a whole, and is an introduction to body changes with the primary focus being on Personal Hygiene: How to keep healthy and look after yourself
  • Talk 2 details specifically with body changes in Puberty and is delivered in two sessions: one the the Years 5 and 6 girls, and the second to Year 5 and 6 boys.
  • Talk 2 is delivered separately to support both genders in extending the discussions in relation to the different body changes

For more information on these sessions, please see the PowerPoint presentations below which form the basis for the talks.
